JEFF BENTLEY, COIN COLLECTOR

1923 25 CENT BILL. Did you know that our quarter used to be a bill? Back on July 2, 1923, the Dominion of Canada, through the Canadian Bank Note Company Ltd. printed this 25 cent bill. Funny when you think of it, although it wasn’t that long ago that our toonie and loonies were bills, and pennies were still in circulation! This bill may have been worth only a quarter back in the day, but it’s considerably more valuable now. Thanks to Jeff Bentley for the donation!

In this Canadian National Park’s Grande Maison it is possible to enter the universe of this original industrial community. The blast furnace reveals the mystery of iron-making. KITCHEN TRIVET

KITCHEN TRIVET. What’s a trivet, you well may ask. Well, it’s a potholder, basically. A thing-a-ma-bob designed to keep your hot pot full of mashed potatoes from melting your plastic tablecloth, or from burning a ring on your countertop, that is coincidentally the same shape as your frying pan. This ceramic trivet is so decorative, it even comes with a hole in it for hanging. Because really, with something this cute, do you really want to put a pot on it? In case you’re wondering, “boulangerie” is a French word for bakery, and “gastronomie Francaise” means French Gastronomy. Which is nothing like French Astronomy. At least, we don’t think so ... (Donated by Cathy Olliffe-Webster.)

MEAGHAN KERVIN ART

MODERN ART PAINTING. We'd like to thank Meaghan Kervin for her original painting. She was one of the first people to actually offer something for the auction - so thank you, Meaghan, for your creativity and your generosity. If you look close, you'll see the 3-D pawprints representing the cats and dogs who depend on the Humane Society. You know, I was driving away from the shelter tonight, in -18 C weather, and I thought about all the dogs and cats inside - warm - fed - loved - (but mostly warm!) and I felt really good about being able to support this important charity. I'm sure Meaghan feels the same way. Thanks to everyone for so enthusiastically supporting this auction and the homeless dogs and cats who are toasty warm tonight.

Colleen of Col’s Crafts used to have an Etsy shop - she’s no longer in business, but we still really appreciate her kind gift. Thank you!

CRAZY CAT LADY CERAMICS

CRAZY CAT LADY BULL BULL BLACK CAT ESPRESSO CUP. This espresso cup is handmade in the Bohemian Cat House in Vermont, USA. (How fabulous that a shop all the way in VERMONT sent the Lakeland Humane Society donations? :) ) It's hand thrown on the potters wheel, hand glazed & the images are hand printed. Being an espresso cup, this little mug is VERY small. We posed it with a medium-sized co ee cup from Tim Horton’s, so you have some idea of scale. Enjoy your coffee with Bull Bull and start your day of cool. Microwavable and dishwasher safe. Bull Bull is one of the many cats who live in the Bohemian Cat House and contribute their happy cattitude to this traditional and popular ceramics company. They have donated SIX espresso cups to this auction and they sell for $38.13 EACH in their highly popular Etsy shop. Thanks Chris and Shelly! JEFF BENTLEY, COIN COLLECTOR

DINOSAUR COIN. This 2010 50 cent piece was created by the Royal Canadian Mint to celebrate the Dinosaur Exhibit and Fossil Gallery at the Canadian Museum of Nature. The coin features a full colour holographic image of a dinosaur and the museum – we’re guessing it’s a tyrannosaurus rex because it’s BIG and scary with lots of teeth, but dinosaur experts (ie. kids) will probably know better than us. Maybe back before the ice age, the Lakeland Humane Society took in homeless dinosaurs, but not so much these days. The coin includes six trading cards, and was donated by Jeff Bentley.

JEFF BENTLEY, COIN COLLECTOR

GOLF COIN. This 1999 sterling silver 50 cent piece was designed by Donald Curley to commemorate the first Canadian Open Golf Championship held in 1904 at the Royal Montreal Golf Club, the oldest golf club in North America. The Canadian Open is the third oldest professional championship in the world. The first Canadian Open Golf Championship was played over 36 holes in a single day, by 12 players. J.H. Oke from the Royal Ottawa golf Course won the championship with a score of 156, and collected prizes of $60 and a medal. The championship moved across Canada until 1980, when it found a permanent home in the challenging Glen Abbey course of Oakville, Ontario. This sterling silver coin was donated by Jeff Bentley and should appeal to coin collectors and golfers alike.

BEVERLEY CLEARY BOOK COLLECTION

If your kid can’t keep his/her nose out of a book, this is the item you NEED to buy! It’s called “The World of Beverly Cleary Collection” and it contains 15 of Cleary’s most famous stories. Don’t know who Beverly Cleary is? First of all, she’s 100. Yup, 100 years old. (She must have done something right!) Beverly Cleary was born in McMinnville, Oregon, and, until she was old enough to attend school, lived on a farm in Yamhill, a town so small it had no library. Her mother arranged with the State Library to have books sent to Yamhill and acted as librarian in a lodge room upstairs over a bank. There young Beverly learned to love books. However, when the family moved to Portland, Beverly soon found herself in the grammar school's low reading circle, an experience that has given her sympathy for the problems of struggling readers. By the third grade she had conquered reading and spent much of her childhood either with books or on her way to and from the public library. Before long her school librarian was suggesting that she should write for boys and girls when she grew up. The idea appealed to her, and she decided that someday she would write the books she longed to read but was unable to find on the library shelves, funny stories about her neighborhood and the sort of children she knew. And so Ribsy, Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, Ellen Tebbits, and her other beloved characters were born. Mrs. Cleary's books have earned her many prestigious awards. In 2000, to honor her invaluable contributions to children's literature, Beverly Cleary was named a "Living Legend" by the Library of Congress. This witty and warm author is truly an international favorite. Mrs. Cleary's books appear in over twenty countries in fourteen languages and her characters, including Henry Huggins, Ellen Tebbits, Otis Spofford, and Beezus and Ramona Quimby, as well as Ribsy, Socks, and Ralph S. Mouse, have delighted children for generations. And her popularity has not diminished. This is a masterful collection from one of the great masters of children’s literature.

PINUP EARRINGS

CHRISTMAS TREE EARRINGS. These cute little Christmas tree earrings were made by Heather, owner of Pin Up Earrings in Oklahoma. She donated several items to our gala last year, and we’re happy to auction off another pair of her vintage-inspired earrings now. Heather says, “I'm a California gal but I have lived all over the States. I went to college and got my paper for Interior Design, but along the way I fell in love with beads, specifically glass beads. I remember the first time I walked into a bead store. I had started playing with polymer clay and a co-worker asked me if I had been to the bead store ~ I had no clue ~ I kid you not ~ the very moment I walked into that store I knew that I would run a bead shop in that very location; eventually I did! I opened my first shop at 25 in Fresno, California in the historic Tower Theater District. Now I make jewelry ~ I still sell some beads on my other etsy shop called ‘gypsipunk’ ~ I am now in OKC and there is a newly restored Vintage Tower Theater less than a block from my home.” For more information visit Heather’s Etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/PinUpEarrings

She’s actually hard to pin down but she’s an artist, crafter, designer, relentless vintage addict and collector who paint, sketches, takes photos, crochets, sews, makes jewellery - the list goes on and on! We spotted Christy’s work in her byZIEHL Creative Studio Etsy shop, drawn to the hilariously hipster mug rugs featuring cats and mice in various states of adorableness. So we contacted her about the rugs, but she wound up sending us a gorgeous handmade tote bag, lined with beautiful satin, and decorated with the saying, “I Cat Even!” And if that wasn’t enough, she also sent along a whole bunch of handmade cat toys for the felines in your family. Thanks, Christy! Love ‘em! For more information, visit her Etsy shop https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/byZIEHL/ or find her on Facebook: https:// www.facebook.com/pages/ByZIEHL/204173446292324

CHIKOCRAFT BY IKO

CAT TRINKET DISHES. These are SO adorable – very tiny, sweet, gorgeous handmade art that comes to you all the way from the great state of Georgia in the US of A. Artist Iko has an Etsy company named ChikoCraft, and she has sold thousands of miraculously miniature earrings, jewellery pendants, tiny bottles filled with magically tiny things and, of course, her gloriously good trinket plates. Her whimsical cat plates are hand built with porcelain clay and then fired twice. The detail is hand drawn with black underglaze, and high fire clear glaze is applied for a glossy finish. The ceramic is white to creamy white in colour. Iko says the dishes can be a simple ring dish, “or whatever you would like them to be.” She has donated two plates to this auction – one is a tabby cat, the other is a tuxedo kitty. Both are about three inches wide; one has feet, one does not. Porcelain is durable, but it’s also breakable, so handle with care. I aspire to create products that will serve as delightful little surprises, whether it's a whimsical pair of earrings or a necklace featuring a unique pendant or design,” she says. To see more of Iko’s fabulous work, visit her ChikoCraft Etsy shop at https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/ChikoCraft or you can like her on

DEANNA HART

LAPGHAN. What’s a lapghan, you may very well ask. It’s an afghan (not a dog afghan, a blanket afghan) what is lap size. Actually, this one made and donated by Deanna Hart, is way bigger than lap-size – it’s the perfect size for covering up all your cold bits when you’re lying on the couch watching Netflix. Or, you know, the Parliamentary Channel. (Whatever floats your boat, no judgment here.) This gorgeous, handmade blankie is in warm earth colours: green, taupe, gold and cream. So beautiful. This would be a gift anyone would thank you for.

ADRIANNE JESWIET, ARTIST

RECYCLED LIGHT BULB ORNAMENT. This gorgeous ornament started out as a dead light bulb but was transformed by the imagination and talent of Kenora, Ontario, artist Adrianne Jeswiet. The bulb was coated with a translucent glass paint and will glow when the sun hits it. If it’s hung in a window it will help prevent birds from hitting the glass. It can also be hung on your Christmas tree. The relief pattern, making up the chickadees and trees, have been painstakingly sculpted by hand and baked onto the glass. Take a look at how detailed these birds are - amazing! Adrianne started her Etsy shop eight years ago. She had just met her now husband and he had convinced her to move from southern Ontario up to the North. It did not take any convincing.... “he is a fabulous guy and I was up for an adventure.” I had been making my recycled glass work for 15 years at that point and I was wondering how this move was going to affect my overall sales since the population up here is much smaller. A good friend recommended Etsy to me. It seemed like a fabulous opportunity to reach more people, despite being in such a rural setting. She helped me set up my shop and I've been learning and growing ever since.” For more information, visit Adrianne’s Etsy shop https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/kissinglass/

JEFF BENTLEY, COIN COLLECTOR

LOONEY TUNES SILVER COIN. Kids of all ages – especially big kids who remember watching Bugs Bunny cartoons on Saturday mornings – will love this 2015 $20 fine silver coin donated by numismatist (collectible money expert) Jeff Bentley. It’s a 99.99% pure silver coin, and it’s one of only 12,500 made, which makes it a valuable collectible. The coin features all the most famous Merrie Melodies characters: Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Sylvester the cat, Tweety Bird, Pepe le Pew and his girlfriend Penelope Pussycat, and the Tasmanian Devil – all in full colour. The coin itself comes in a nifty wooden box with ACME emblazoned on the front (remember everything in those cartoons came from Acme?), and a secret compartment with the certificate of authenticity. Although we don’t have reserved bids, Jeff suggests the bidding start at $125 for this valuable coin.
