HANDMADE GLASS DOG ORNAMENT. Darlene Storgeoff is a glass artist from Edmonton
who makes the most incredibly sweet things out of glass – including this adorable
Dalmatian she created specifically for the Lakeland Humane Society. This doggie is
about two inches tall, and is resplendent in lots of black dots, a red collar, red
decorative beads on his bottom, and a red ribbon you can use to hang him from your
Christmas tree. He’s SO cute! Darlene didn’t hesitate to donate something to this
auction, partly because “my goal is to share my love of Alberta and the outdoors
through my glass art.” Sometimes called lampwork, flame work or torch work, glass
beads are made using a propane/oxygen torch. Worked at a temperature of 1200 to
1400 degrees, solid glass can be made pliable and shaped into whatever the artist can
imagine! The shaped glass is then taken directly from the torch and is annealed in a
digitally controlled kiln. Annealing reduces stress in the glass and results in a stronger,
more durable finished product. Darlene is a member of the Alberta Craft Council, and
of the International Society of Glass Beadmakers. Her work is sold at the Whyte
Museum Gallery Shop in Banff, and the Alberta Craft Council Gallery Shop in Edmonton.
