BOUQUET OF GLASS FLOWERS. Belinda Pefanis is an animal lover and glass artist who
lives in Calgary and sells her custom glass work in her Etsy shop, Belinda’s Glass
Studio. She’s only been on Etsy for less than a year but already she is doing
extraordinarily well, and it’s no wonder! Her work is bright, creative, colourful and
beautiful. “I bought my kiln eight months ago,” she says, “and I still feel like a kid in a
candy store.” She donated many items to this auction, including this bouquet of glass
flowers with wire stems. You could bunch them together in a pretty vase, or you could
put them individually all over your house, or at work - wherever you need a posey to
BEADED CHOKER. This choker would look so elegant on a long, swan-like neck just like
my own. ;) Seriously, though, it is so elegant and graceful, and would be an amazing
accessory for your snazziest dress or open neck silk shirt. It’s made of hematite and
white pearls, with sterling silver components, and it’s way more valuable than you
might think. Made and donated by Iona Bailey of Firefrost Studio in Cold Lake. For
more information, contact Iona at www.firefroststudio.com, or call 780-594-1835.
Thanks Iona!

SECURITY BLANKETS. Did you know that security blankets should come in pairs?
Heather Hamilton of Heather’s Hugables has created two absolutely adorable teddy
bear blankets for this auction – both are exactly the same. The idea, she says, is that
the child never has to do without his/her blankie when it’s being washed. “One’s with
the child, the other’s in the wash,” she says. Brilliant! The bears are called “Lovey”, and
they’re 18 inch heirloom security blankets, hand-crocheted, with child-safe eyes and
nose. Machine wash in cold water and lay flat to dry. How awesome is that? For more
information, you can e-mail Heather at hhugables@gmail.com

TREE OF LIFE. Isn’t this the prettiest Tree of Life you’ve ever seen? So elegant and bright, and
you know the dreams you have for your favourite pet will be good ones because of the bright and
blingy pawprint jewel in the centre. Jennifer Bracegirdle of Moonlight Meadows made this
beautiful piece. A Tree of Life is like a dreamcatcher, but it’s different! Jennifer writes, “After
surgery, I wasn't able to make dreamcatchers as I was on bedrest recovering. But my fingers
itched to craft. I pulled out some old stainless steel and decided I'd try my hand at something new
- and yet meaningful to me. Thus was created the Tree of Life series that has expanded my
artisan crafting to a new horizon.” Wikipedia: "The tree of knowledge, connecting to heaven and
the underworld, and the tree of life, connecting all forms of creation, are both forms of the world
tree or cosmic tree, according to the Encyclopædia Britannica, and are portrayed in various
religions and philosophies as the same tree." For more information, find her on Facebook: https://

CHRISTMAS WREATH. Big thanks to Donna Hill for making and donating this truly beautiful
Christmas wreath. It’s covered with faux poinsettias and sparkles and ribbons, and it would look
really luxe on anyone’s front door this holiday season. Thanks also to Donna for collecting a
whole carload of items for the shelter, and for selling raffle tickets at local stores, not once, but
twice! She came into the shelter yesterday and said how all this giving made her feel warm and
fuzzy - but honestly, it’s us who have the warm and fuzzies thanks to volunteers like her. We
always say the Lakeland Humane Society has the best volunteers, but it’s true. We do. Thank
you, everyone. oxo
SIAMESE SEAGLASS NECKLACE. Shirley Varner of Halifax, Nova Scotia, is a very special
person. It was no big deal for her to donate some of her handmade jewelry and send it all the way
across the country to a little animal shelter in Cold Lake, because the whole purpose of her
business is to help cats - especially stray and feral ones. She says, “Having a cottage, near the
ocean, but also near a farm, we have found many people tend to drop off their unwanted pets,
expecting them to survive on their own, which, of course, they are unable to do. As a result, they
tend to end up on our doorstep, looking for help. If anyone is interested in reading about the cats
I've personally rescued, directly from jewelry sales and updates, you can visit my website at:

U.S. DOLLAR BILL SET. This finely mounted and preserved set of American dollar bills
(donated by Jeff Bentley) includes a 1957 Silver Certificate with Blue Seal and a 1957
Blue Seal Star Note. Introduced by an Act of Congress in 1878, Silver Certificates were
backed by Silver held in the U.S. Treasury and could actually be redeemed for exactly
$1 of Silver Bullion until June 24, 1968. Silver Certificate Star Notes are among the
most valuable and sought after types of U.S. currency. A Star Note is actually a
“replacement note” substituted by the Bureau of Printing and Engraving when a bill is
accidentally misprinted or damaged.
SOFT SCARVES. Check these pretties out: this trio of soft scarves are
soooooooooo delicate. Made of the most delicate lace, these beauties will frame

with your favourite jean jacket. Thanks to Veronica Martel Davies for donating
them!

MELANIE MITCHELL GIFT BAG. How much does Cold Lake love Melanie Mitchell?
We love her products like a pay it forward coffee at Timmy’s; we love her like

the dog out for a walk and he blessedly decides to do his business by the time
you get to the end of the driveway. Melanie Mitchell is an institution in this
town and it’s no wonder. She has created bath and beauty products that have
won the hearts of people all over the world. Over the past six years, her

DISCOVERY TOYS TAPE MEASURE. I was talking to ValMarie Braun about this toy
when she came in to the shelter to donate a whole bunch of cool toys - she said
it’s a real tape measure that really measures stu - with big, easy-to-read
numbers, and easy for small fingers to play with. I thought, hey, this would also
be great for older people like myself whose arthritic fingers might not be able
to handle a normal tape measure, and who have trouble reading the
measurements without their reading glasses! So whether you have a child who
is aged three or older, or you’re a grandma/grandpa who still needs to measure
stu around the house, this toy is for you! For more information about
Discovery Toys, contact ValMarie Braun at 780-639-3331, braun.101@hotmail.com, or visit her website: http://www.discoverytoys.com/pws/valmarie/tabs/pw-home.aspx#sthash.cVcfqRHN.hDOdVfqZ.dpbs

BEACH AT SUNSET NIGHT LIGHT. Belinda Pefanis, of Belinda’s Glass Studio in Calgary,
was really inspired when she created this night light. She writes, “I can't tell you how
many times I've come across a beautiful fused glass beach scene by a glass artist named Faye
Malench. She's created a waved art panel featuring sand, rocks, grass and this amazing orange
and yellow sun. I have it saved to a Pinterest page and I look at it almost daily with the same two
thoughts: 1) I want to try and recreate this; 2) It's so unique and special ... it would be very wrong
to try and recreate this. Recently I found her blog and decided I had to know how she made the
sun. It has these amazing orange rings and a darker orange outside that looks so perfect and
would be extremely difficult to create. It turns out she created the sun in a pot melt. It's so
perfect. If you are into glass, you'll know pot melts are really unpredictable. Anyway, in
her blog, someone wrote and said they wanted to try and recreate this scene and she
said anyone can recreate it as long as they give a mention to her name. So after a year
of admiring Faye's piece, I was am excited to try and tackle this scene. I haven't done a
pot melt yet. My sun is very pale in comparison but it was really fun to create anyway.
Thank you Faye! Your work is so wonderful!” And so is yours, Belinda! The glass
portion of the night light measures 3 inches by 3 inches and the light sensor adds an
extra inch on the bottom. The night light features an automatic on/o sensor and
comes with a clear 4 watt bulb. For more information about Belinda’s Glass Studio, visit
her Etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/BelindasGlassStudio.

1981 SILVER TRAIN COIN. So many people have a romance with the railway, and those folks are
going to love this gorgeous silver dollar coin commemorating the 100th anniversary of the approval
by the Canadian government to build the Trans-Canada Railway. Donated by Jeff Bentley – thanks
Jeff!
1979 GRIFFON TRICENTENNIAL COIN. This beautiful, heavy silver dollar – donated by
Jeff Bentley – was created to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the first voyage by
a commercial ship on the Great Lakes. There are all kinds of tales about the great
ships, including Le Griffon, which has often been ascribed the honour of having
been the first true ship to ply the waters of one of the Great Lakes, but that title
depends greatly on how one defines the term “ship.” It is generally agreed,
however, that the vessel was the first “named” ship to sail upon the Great
Lakes. Much of the rest of her story is obscured beneath the mists of time and
what little we do know comes from a period wherein the record of such matters
as the building of large military and commercial ships were complicated by the
politics and intrigues of the time and often of dubious credibility owing to the
tendency to exaggeration and hucksterism which was somewhat the norm
amongst Canada’s early explorers. There’s a great story about the shipwreck of
Le Griffon, considered to be the Holy Grail of Great Lakes shipwrecks – you can
read the whole story here: http://www.manitoulin.ca/2015/06/30/the-griffon-the-enduring-mystery-of-the-wreck-of-lasalles-great-lakes-ship/

FOUR ONE DOLLAR BILLS. These four Canadian dollar bills are being sold as a set.
Donated by Jeff Bentley, they offer a unique look at how Canadian bills have changed
over the years. The oldest one was printed in 1937. Canadian bank notes from 1937 feature a
portrait of King George VI (with exception of $100 and $1000 bills). The first thing you will probably notice is
that the left side of each bank note has English text and the right hand side has French text. This was a change
from 1935 bank notes, which were printed with either just French or just English text. The second oldest bill is
from 1954. It features a “modified portrait” of Queen Elizabeth – in some notes of that year a “devil’s face”
could be seen in her hair. Once people realized it, the notes were modified and reprinted. The next oldest bill is
from 1967, Canada’s Centennial year, and it features the Centennial logo. The newest bill was printed in 1973.
ROYAL WEDDING COIN. It doesn’t seem that long ago that Prince Handsome and tied
the knot but it’s actually been five years! Jeff Bentley has donated this 2011 Royal
Canadian Mint coin commemorating the wedding celebration of HRH Prince William of
Wales and Miss Catherine Middleton. This 25 cent piece features a full colour photo of
the Royal couple, who became engaged during a trip to Kenya in October 2010, and
were married on April 29, 2011.
WRAP. NOT RAP. Feeling Cold Lake’s cold? Wrap this wrap around your
shoulders. Leanna Scherr has knit this large, soft wrap with 100% acrylic,
machine washable yarn. It’s mostly a deep, rich aubergine colour, but it’s
trimmed with black. So elegant. You could wear this over your favourite bare-
shouldered holiday dress and look stunning. Or you could throw it over a casual
jacket, or just snuggle in it while you’re curled up in front of the fireplace with a
good book. Thanks, Leanna, it’s gorgeous!
DOG SWEATER & HUMAN HAT. Come on, admit it - you’ve always wanted to
match your dog. Am I right? Yeah I knew it. Well guess what! NOW YOU CAN!
There are two parts to this item. One is a toque, made with 100% acrylic yarn,
and the other is a dog jacket, made from the same material and designed for a
small dog. Made and donated by Dawn Hidson. Comes with a lovely card with
care information. Thanks Dawn!
